The search for a cure for HIV/AIDS
has been long, grueling and unproductive. However, the search may seem to be
soon halted as a cure is believed to have been found.
If claims by Vice Chancellor,
Professor Francis Otunda, are anything to go by, then, Michael Okpara
University of Agriculture might have discovered a drug for the treatment and
cure for HIV/ AIDS.

Otunda told newsmen at the
university campus in Abia State, Nigeria on Wednesday, February 1st,
2017, that the finding followed years of scientific research by the
institution.
The breakthrough was made by Maduike
Ezeibe, a professor of Veterinary Medicine and Clinical Virology in the
university who had earlier presented the research findings to the World
Virology Conference in Atlanta in 2015, and Antonio (Texas) in 2016.
Ezeibe said the drug was produced
with Aluminum Silicate and Magnesium Silicate (Synthetic Aluminum- Magnesium
Silicate) and that about 10 volunteers living with the virus who applied
through their doctor to the VC have been treated.
Ezeibe also said that the medicine
was patented in August 2014 in Nigeria and called on the Federal Government to
help him secure international patency for the drug.
According to him: “If commercialized, the Medicinal Synthetic
Aluminum- Magnesium Silicate would become an alternative for petroleum to the
Nigerian economy.”
