FG TO INCREASE CORPS MEMBERS ALLOWANCE
For a long time now, there has been
a somewhat lingering agitation to increase the monthly allowance of Corps
members in the country and if the government is to be believed, then Corps
members can now smile wherever they are.
The minister of Youths and Sports
Development, Solomon Dalung, on Monday February 6th, 2017, disclosed
that government has initiated the process of upward review of corps members’
allowances.
Dalung made this revelation, albeit
too good to be true, when he paid an unscheduled inspection visit to the
National Youth Service Corps Orientation Camp in Mangu, Plateau State, to
enable him ascertain the welfare of the scheme’s members and status of
facilities at the camp.
The minister while promising that
government will not compromise the security and welfare of youths on national
service acknowledged that what was being paid as allowances to corps members
today had become grossly insufficient for them. I agree!!!!!!!!!!!!!
According to Dalung, the review is
undergoing legislative process. However, I warn that Corps members as well as
prospective corps member should not raise their hopes too high because the
government is notorious for lack of integrity.
Just for your knowledge, Corps
members allowance was increased by former president Goodluck Jonathan in July
2011 from N9, 775 to N19, 800. Yet many said the former president did not do
anything.
Notwithstanding, Dalung mentioned
something like N50 000. If the current administration honours its word, then
Corps Members will be expecting more than enough upkeep money.
