Yahya Jammeh

Yahya Jammeh the recalcitrant Gambian leader who lost to Adama Barrow after a presidential election held last year, and who had refused to concede defeat and relinquish power has finally surrendered.

Jammeh had been given a 12 noon ultimatum to vacate the seat of power on Friday 20th January 2017 as foreign military troops stationed in Senegal eagerly awaited a mandate to proceed with his forceful removal.

According to reports, the Gambian leader had at first violated the ultimatum by insisting on retaining power in spite of the fact that he lost the presidential election to Adama Barrow, but subsequently pleaded for more time to enable him step down.

Nonetheless, fresh reports indicate that the recalcitrant Jammeh has finally agreed surrender, relinquish power to Adama Barrow, and leave the Gambia after another purported round of mediation between him and some African leaders.

According to Guinean officials, Jammeh is expected to move to Conakry after leaving Gambia. In effect, there will be no need to employ force and loss of lives and properties will be averted.
