Dr. Kayode Fayemi the Minister of
Solid Minerals Development, while delivering the 2016 convocation lecture of
the University of Lagos revealed that he drove taxis and worked as a guard
notwithstanding the fact that he was a graduate.
According Fayemi:
“What you need to know, however is that as a UNILAG graduate and a
postgraduate student in the United Kingdom, I have driven taxis and worked as a
guard amongst other several menial jobs to survive.”
Fayemi made this revelation as a
challenge to Nigerian youths to explore and utilize their creative ability for
societal development.
The Minister urged young people to
resist the thought that they are entitled to jobs just because of parents’
influence or because they have university degrees.
Furthermore, he urged young people
to be prepared to bend backwards and do things they might consider to be
beneath them because the only guarantee they have in this life is what they do
for themselves with the grace God has bestowed on them all.
“Be prepared for surprises and disappointment, because life is bound to
hand you a couple of them,” Fayemi said at the lecture.
