GOVERNMENT ORDERS SCHOOLS TO TEACH ONLY CHRISTIANITY
As schools opened for the new
academic year, Swaziland has instructed that all schools teach only
Christianity.
The education Ministry, sometime
last week ordered all head teachers to ensure that the syllabus would not
mention any religion other than Christianity such as Islam and Judaism.
The new Christianity-only syllabus
emerged after public complaints over Asian and Muslim migration into the
country which had led parliament to set up a commission of enquiry last year.
Other religions have not been
banned from the educational system. According to Pat Muir who is a top
education ministry official, other religions will just not be offered at
primary and high school level in order to avoid confusing pupils.
While this move has been strongly
criticized by opponents who say it is fuelling intolerance of Muslims,
proponents have backed up the government by asserting that Christianity is the bedrock
religion on which the country was built.
