RUSSIA HACKED OUR ELECTION DATABASE: OBAMA ORDERS 35 RUSSIAN DIPLOMATS TO VACATE THE COUNTRY.

The government of the United States
of America led by President Barack Obama has ordered 35 Russian diplomats to
leave the US within 72 hours.
This directive was preceded by an
accusation by the US government that Russia meddled in its 2016 presidential
election in which Donald Trump emerged as president elect.
The US government has reason to
believe that its election database was hacked by Russia or Russians and that
the hacking was undoubtedly intended to influence the outcome of the election.
The implication of this is that Donald Trump would probably not have won the
election.
According to a statement from the
White House, "Russia's
cyberactivities were intended to influence the election, erode faith in US
democratic institutions, sow doubt about the integrity of our electoral
process, and undermine confidence in the institutions of the US government. These
actions are unacceptable and will not be tolerated."
Owing to
this, President Barack Obama has taken
unprecedented steps to retaliate against the alleged Russian interference in
the 2016 election, prompting vows from Russian authorities that Moscow will
respond in kind.
Thus,
Obama’s directive to 35 Russian diplomats to leave the country is most notable
amongst a list of sanctions given by the US President.
Describing
Russia's involvement as "Significant
Malicious Cyber-Enabled Activities," the US government has ordered 35
Russian diplomats to leave the country within 72 hours. It also sanctioned four
Russian individuals; five Russian entities and ordered the closure of two
Russian compounds for what it said was election interference.
According
to statements from the White House and the Treasury Department, the government
has sanctioned nine entities and individuals over their alleged interference in
the election: the GRU and the FSB, which are two Russian intelligence services;
four individual officers of the GRU; and three companies that provided material
support to the GRU's operations.
The US also separately sanctioned two
Russian individuals, Evgeniy Mikhailovich Bogachev and Alexey Belan,
for using cyber-enabled means to allegedly cause misappropriation of funds and
personal identifying information. They've long been sought by the FBI.
In the
statement oredering 35 Russian diplomats to leave the US within 72 hours, Obama
also stated thus:
"These actions follow repeated private
and public warnings that we have issued to the Russian government, and are a
necessary and appropriate response to efforts to harm US interests in violation
of established international norms of behaviour."
In Nigeria,
we have a popular proverb that says: “When two grown-ups are quarrelling, the
little ones are not safe.” The US and Russia are amongst the most influential
nations in the world. A conflict between them could affect many other
countries. Could even be worse.
Nonetheless,
Russia is yet to respond. Anticipating a response is not out of place because
countries do respond in situations such as this.
